  1. As Financial Need is the most important criteria for determining the worthiness of an FETaylor applicant, how do you determine if a candidate really is in Financial need? What is financial need? How would you define it? What are some good questions to help guide the interviewer to determine this?
    If under 22 what is her parents’ financial situation? Can they help? I often ask if she has other siblings and how old the siblings are – helps to get a sense of financial pressures the family may be facing in terms of further education. Getting to know the candidate by having a conversation about family and what they do outside of school often gives an insight into financial need.

  2. How do we screen better?
    Often it is the work that the interviewers have asked the women to do before you meet with them that helps most with the screening process. Send the applicant the financial/budget page of the application form PRE: Interview so that you have a discussion starting point. Why not ask your candidate to write a brief essay or letter explaining why she should be a candidate for this scholarship? – before you meet with her?

  3. Can I give advice about the financial side of the application?
    Yes. Most young girls seem to know the cost of their clothing, but are unrealistic about the cost of food, transport, lodging and textbooks. Ensure that she is realistic about the income side of her budget – how much can she earn, does she have RESPs, scholarships, etc.

  4. Is the Chapter letter very important?
    Yes. During your interview you will learn things about your candidate that she might not put into her own letter. Therefore highlight the applicant’s philanthropic endeavors; volunteering, etc. have her describe her need to you.

  5. How should we guide the applicant about her own letter?
    P.E.O.s often find the applicants very modest. Please be sure that the woman shares her accomplishments as well as her goals and aspirations – which are usually very commendable!  Cris suggests that she do some research on what constitutes a good personal statement. There is lots of information available on the Internet.

  6. If our candidate did not receive a scholarship last year (her first year of post-secondary ed) can we have her apply again in her second year?
    Yes, by all means! Any number of things may have changed – the number of applicants, her marks, her letter of reference, her financial status.

  7. Our candidate is not really in need financially as she has received a number of scholarships from her high school, province, etc., should we forward her application?
    No. But, if she is going into first year, you may want to look at her again next year as a lot of first year students often have more money than those who will be going into second year.

  8. Does our chapter have to vote on whether or not a candidate’s application should be sent in?
    Yes, a chapter vote is required.

  9. When will we receive notification about whether or not our candidate has received a scholarship?
    Usually the first week of September. The information will go to the person from your chapter who has sent in the application. Please be sure to write the email/ name and address on the chapter letter of the person you would like to be notified, not just on the envelope.

  10. How will we be notified?
    Scotia Trust would prefer the email of the P.E.O. who sent in the application form so that the info can be sent out via email. See above.

  11. When will the candidate receive her scholarship cheque?
    Early to mid-September, as soon as Scotia Trust can mail them out.

  12. Can an applicant receive more than one F.E. Taylor scholarship?
    No, this is a one-time only scholarship.

  13. Is she required to include an official transcript or copy of this?
    Yes! She must request an official transcript of her grade twelve final marks! Make sure there is an official government stamp or other signature to indicate that the transcript is official (original or copy)
